De Bijenkorf

Netherlands

The brief

De Bijenkorf has been Holland’s best-known department store since 1909. Our challenge, over many years of continuous strategic collaboration, was to continue the design legacy of Breuer and Dudok, creating totally new stores and departments retail interiors throughout their chain of stores including the 20,000 sqm Amsterdam flagship.

Our approach

The diversity of projects undertaken over many years of collaboration cover a multitude of different retail concepts, from fashion and beauty to media and food, forcing us to always respond imaginatively to their specific needs as well as aiming to create timeless solutions, which are simple, effective and exciting.

The strategic master planning of the stores and internal circulation studies were the initial starting point of almost every project and was a fundamental tool in establishing a coherent design programme and an effective collaboration with their own in-house teams and buyers.

The De Bijenkorf brand has gone from strength to strength in recent years attracting top luxury fashion brands to pen their boutiques within the flagships and increasing the overall level of quality of their offer. The business has recently been acquired by the Weston family, owners of Britain's Selfridges, Canada's Holt Renfrew and Ireland's Brown Thomas.
